Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, the largest marine sanctuary in the United States encompassing 5,322 square miles. The Monterey Bay submarine canyon with depths down to 10,663 feet (3,250 meters) is much larger than the Grand Canyon, and is the deepest underwater canyon off the continental U.S.. |

There are Grey whales, Blue whales, Minke
whales, Fin whales, Humpback whales, Pacific Right whales, Sperm whales,
and several porpoise and dolphin species, sea otters, leather back
turtles, sun fish and great white sharks just to name a few of the many
species. This area also has the largest kelp forest in the U.S..
Approximately 21 endangered and threatened animals spend all or part of their lives in the Sanctuary. |
